How does Digis Unlimited Phone using Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) work? What makes it different from traditional phone service?

Traditionally, a phone conversation is converted into electronic signals that traverse an elaborate network of switches, in a dedicated circuit that lasts the duration of a call. In Voice over Internet Protocol, a conversation is converted to packets of data that travel over the Internet or private networks, just like e-mails or Web pages, though voice packets get priority status. The packets get reassembled and converted to sound on the other end of the call.   It is priced much lower than standard phone service, and doesn't require the taxes and fees that most traditional phone companies must add to their price.   The quality of the service is nearly identical to, or sometimes better than, traditional phone service.

Typical installation is configured like the diagram below. Advanced whole home installation is also available that will allows you to use all the telephones in your home on the service throught the one phone adapter.

What kind of equipment do I need?

All you need is a high-speed internet connection and a phone adaptor.   Digis provides the phone adapter that allows your standard phones to use the Internet connection to place calls.   The Digis adapter can link to an entire home's wiring so adaptors aren't required at each extension.    The adapter is plugged in between your Internet connection and your router or computer.   Your home phone can then be plugged directly into the adaptor, or a phone wire can be run from the adaptor to a phone extension jack so that all the phones in your home can use the service.

What are the advantages of Digis Unlimited Phone?

It makes long-distance calls less expensive by removing some of the access charges required for use of the public telephone network. A user's physical location also becomes irrelevant; Digis lets people obtain a number for their area, and virtual numbers can be set up in other areas that all ring to the same phone. You can take your Phone Adapter with you when you travel and use it wherever you have a high-speed Internet connection.   Advanced features are included-- like programming call-forwarding through a web tool, receiving e-mail and text message notification of voicemail messages, call transfer, etc.   Virtually all traditional telephone features are included in the low price, and additional features are now available as well.

Are there any limitations to the service?

Since voice-over-IP operates over the Internet, Digis Phone services do not work in blackouts or if your Internet connection is down.   However, a backup number (such as a cell phone) can be used as a failover phone, which will ring if the Digis Phone service is unavailable.   Fax machines may or may not work on an Internet phone connection.   You may want to consider an Internet fax service such as e-fax ( www.efax.com ).

What is the voice quality like?

The quality is typically at least as good as a cell phone, and most times as good or better than a land line.

How do I port my existing phone number?

When you sign up for Digis Unlimited Phone, you'll receive a new local phone number. However you may elect to "port" your existing phone number over to our service.   That decision can be made at the time of installation, or can be done later once you've tried the service.   You will need to complete a Letter of Agency (LOA) allowing us to contact your current carrier and port your number to our service.   The Letter of Agency should have the same address and account number as your present carrier has on record, and this can be obtained from a recent bill from your current carrier.   You fill out the Letter of Agency (LOA) online by going to http://my.digis.net once you've signed up for service, logging in and clicking on the "Port Phone Number" link next to your VoIP Unlimited Phone service under the My Account tab.   If you need a login ID and password for your my.digis.net account, it may be on your installation invoice, or you can obtain it by calling 888-DIGIS-88.
